courage of the fearless crew the Minnow would be lost.”  Gilligan’s Island was an allegory of a nation in peril during trying times—aground and bound together despite the very substantial differences that could have doomed them all to a tragic end.  The innocent ignorance and obedience of Gilligan; the stern but fair authoritarianism of the Skipper; the entitled and pampered but otherwise useless Howells; the superficial and beautiful Ginger; the always resourceful Professor and Mary Ann, the girl-next-door to bake cookies and coconut smoothies.  For too few seasons they managed to make it work without elections, red-tape, consultants, hidden videos, super-pacs, parties, or filibusters.

In the political world of today the castaways would be pointing fingers, finding fault, appointing scapegoats, and leading their fragile life together toward a predictable collapse.  Worse than that, we as an audience would be tuning in and taking sides—a horrid reality show that asks us to applaud the failures and weakness of others, appealing to the lesser angels of our nature, and applauding ruthlessness and selfishness as true virtues of success.  Not your mom and dad’s nightly escape from reality.  I don’t know about you, but I want to see them all make it.  I’m rooting for them all.  I don’t see sides, I see the island.  Where is the civics lesson we all seem to be in such dire need of?  Here on Gilligan’s island.

Some political analysts see this as damaging evidence that Romney is out of touch with the general population. What do you think?
